Language Development Commonly Seen in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder
This includes characteristics of these disorders as related to communication and common difficulties related to this area.
Treatment Approaches
A variety of approaches will be discussed that are evidence- based, as related to intervention. These include Speech Therapy, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and the Developmental, Individual-differences approach (DIR) to name a few.
Strategies
We will discuss a multitude of practical strategies commonly used to build language skills of these individuals.
Social Communication
Techniques on how to teach these pragmatic language skills will be presented. We will also discuss implementation and support of these techniques, across different environments.
Team Collaboration
The presenter will discuss the importance of working together and training the team on implementation of skills taught during therapy sessions.
Measuring Progress
Information will be provided regarding writing goals, assessments and modifying Intervention techniques as needed based on progress monitoring.

Maria is an ASHA certified and licensed Speech Language Pathologist, She is a specialist in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders. She plays a significant role in shaping future professionals as an adjunct supervisor at Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Maria began her professional journey applying her expertise at St. Mary’s Medical Center Outpatient Facility. Her expertise spans a diverse range of areas, including feeding/swallowing, myofunctional disorders, receptive and expressive language, developmental delay, pragmatic (social communication), tongue thrust, phonological skills, and motor speech. This combination of over 20 years of clinical experience, educational background, and professional certifications positions her as a highly qualified provider of comprehensive evaluations and tailored care plans for clients of all ages.
