In any classroom there exists a percentage of students who are isolated or rejected by their classmates. Often, the rejected child is failing to understand and interpret “Social Language.” It is estimated that 90+percent of the messages that we communicate to one another are communicated via nonverbal language. If a child is unable to understand this language, he will become an unappealing social partner.
Nonverbal language (paralinguistics) consists of four areas:
- KINESICS: The use of the body to communicate via gestures, posture, facial expression, etc.
- PROXEMICS: Use of physical space to communicate via contact, closeness, public, social and intimate spaces
- VOCALICS: Use of the voice to communicate via pitch, tempo, pause, loudness.
- ARTIFACTUAL SYSTEMS: Use of clothing and accessories to communicate.
This session will demonstrate and explain these concepts and their critical importance in social acceptance.
We will also discuss ways that a teacher can assist the isolated child become a part of the learning community.
