These are unprecedented times for everyone as we try to adjust to the
“new normal” due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Schools across the country
are shut down and education is now being accomplished on-line. This
poses additional challenges to those students with exceptionality. How
do we assure they are not being left behind in this process?
Having a student with Asperger syndrome/High Functioning Autism
(AS/hfASD) in the classroom presents serious challenges that many
educators are not equipped to handle. Now we are asked to support
these students using this new service delivery model? How do we assure
they are able to achieve the goals defined in their IEPs or 504s?
Having provided tele therapy for years to clients throughout the
world, Timothy Kowalski is now shifting his practice to a
predominately tele therapy model to meet the challenges demanded of
This presentation will discuss how to incorporate tele therapy to meet
the needs of these students. It will discuss the academic skills and
deficits frequently associated with AS/hfASD. Participants will learn
a variety of behavioral supports designed to enhance the child’s
ability to initiate work assignments, increase motivation, decrease
distraction, compensate for gross and fine motor deficits, adapt the
curriculum, modify academics, and increase cognitive processing. By
employing these techniques, educators will learn how to defuse power
struggles frequently seen in the academic environment and implement
procedures shown to benefit all.

Timothy P. Kowalski, M.A.,C.C.C. is a licensed speech-language pathologist specializing in social-pragmatic communication deficits and internationally known expert on Asperger Syndrome. You will find him to be an entertaining, dynamic presenter who provides insights and strategies that can be immediately implemented. His Orlando practice has seen clients from Europe, South America, Asia, and throughout the USA. He regularly consults to schools on best practices for students identified or suspected of having Asperger syndrome, provides school-wide district in-services, and is a guest lecturer at universities and colleges. Mr. Kowalski has worked in a variety of psychiatric healthcare delivery systems including in-patient and outpatient psychiatric hospitals, sex-offender units, and school-based settings. He obtained his Master’s degree in Speech Communications from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders from Southern Connecticut State College in New Haven. Mr. Kowalski is the author of eight books on Asperger syndrome and an article, Assessing Social Communication in
Asperger Syndrome. He previously held the positions of Vice President of Professional Practices in Speech-Language Pathology and Vice President of Convention for the Florida Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is also a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Autism Society of America. He is the recipient of the “2010 Clinician of the Year Award” offered by the Florida Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists and one of eight national nominees for the 2011 ASHA Louis M. di Carlo Award for Recent Clinical Achievement. He also holds the “TEAMS
2000 Speech-Language Pathologist of the Year” award for his work with autism in the four-countywide greater Orlando metropolitan area and has served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Orlando Chapter of the Autism Society of America and the Central Florida Center for Independent Living. He regularly presents on a wide variety of issues relative to Asperger syndrome at national and international seminars.
