Many students receive reading intervention consistently — and still don't make the progress we expect. This session takes a closer look at why, moving beyond "try harder" or "add more minutes," to examine the real gaps that often go unaddressed.
Attendees will explore how to identify root-cause deficits that surface-level, accuracy-focused instruction can miss, and how to adjust intervention when co-occurring conditions like ADHD and Autism are shaping how a student attends to, processes, and responds to instruction. We'll also examine commonly overlooked components of literacy instruction — the pieces beyond decoding that are essential for true reading growth — and discuss how to use progress monitoring data to catch a stalled trajectory before months are lost. Throughout, the session will be grounded in evidence-based approaches, giving attendees practical, research-backed strategies they can bring back to their classrooms and caseloads immediately.
Designed for teachers, SLPs, and other professionals supporting struggling readers, this session will help attendees walk away with a clearer diagnostic lens and concrete next steps for students whose progress has plateaued
Deanna Ferello is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Certified Structured Literacy Interventionist with 12 years of experience providing reading intervention to children from Pre-K through 8th grade in both public school and private clinic settings. She specializes in working with children with learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism, and other complex learning profiles, helping them build the foundational skills needed to become confident, capable readers. Deanna is a returning presenter for Reading with TLC.
