Math is often taught as mere calculation and meaningless application of formulas. New studies in brain imaging showing we learn from making mistakes and solving problems are leading math teachers to embrace new impulses in teaching math. Through enlivening explorations of underlying patterns and relationships, teachers are helping both gifted and challenged students develop reflective, flexible, logical thinking and mathematical understanding.

In Part 1, Learning to Learn, we’ll explore our ‘constants’ and ‘variables’, patterns of learning, impact of mindset on learning, and negative self-talk.

In Part II, Doing the Math, we’ll examine ways to teach math, by introducing the whole then exploring patterns and relationships of parts, using concrete manipulatives to build abstract understanding, and developing strategies to solve problems. In the process, we’ll observe archetypical underpinnings of math that make math meaningful and relevant.

Concepts and methods shared address needs of students of all ages and are applicable in classroom and tutoring settings.
