Presenter:   Dr. Maryanne Wolf

TUESDAY, JUNE 3, 2025  7:00 PM – 9:00 PM EST

Description:

One of the most iconic thought leaders of our time can't wait to show you how science-based strategies featuring imaginative characters like Splendiferous Spiders and Empathic Frogs can help create an explosion in vocabulary and fluency skills, catapulting comprehension for your students!

This presentation will begin with an overview of the multiple components that contribute to the developing reading brain. Based on years of "gold-standard," randomized control treatment studies, the multi-component intervention approach by Wolf and her colleagues will be described as an exceptional complement and proven expansion of work on phonics and phoneme awareness in approaches such as Orton Gillingham, Lively Letters, and other structured literacy interventions.

Emphasized throughout will be the need to connect phonics and phonemes with the powerful contributions of semantic development that is clear and obvious to students (vocabulary writ large!), along with the contributions of syntax and morphology to fluency and comprehension. An expanded understanding of foundational skills and of fluency will be presented as the best on-ramp to deep reading comprehension. Along the way, a sassy spider named Ms. MIM will show how words can have as many meanings as she has legs: Polysemy made fun! And two wonderfully different species (a dog and a frog) will show how critical thinking and empathy can make reading a joyous act.

The newly designed RAVE-O Program will be used as an example of how all these elements can be connected in intervention that:

1) simulates the complexity of the reading brain

2) addresses the heterogeneity of our many different struggling readers, including our multilingual readers

3) helps readers discover the joy of reading and the power of their own strengths and their own efforts
