Structured Literacy is the framework for evidence-aligned reading instruction, but the programs that fall under its umbrella don't all work the same way. This session gives educators a clear foundation in the core principles of Structured Literacy (explicit, systematic, cumulative, and diagnostic) and then closely examines two instructional approaches within that framework.
Participants will leave able to:
- Explain the defining features of Structured Literacy
- Distinguish print-to-speech from speech-to-print instruction
- Recognize each approach in commonly used programs and materials
- Make more informed decisions about instruction for their students
Presenter Bio:
Nicole Chick, M.S.Ed., CAS, A/OGA, C-SLDI, is a seasoned Literacy Specialist with over 20 years of experience in education. Licensed in Connecticut and Vermont, she has worked as a public educator, university instructor, and mentor to pre-service teachers. Nicole specializes in structured literacy and dyslexia support, providing instruction to students and consulting with school districts through her literacy center, Early Literacy Labs, in Waitsfield, Vermont
