The first in a collection of three Hot Topic sessions by the world renowned author of Driven to Distraction, this webinar by Dr. Edward Hallowell will provide a wealth of information and a new way of thinking about ADHD – Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Many of us have students or children in our lives who have been diagnosed with, or show the hallmark characteristics of, this very common trait. What if instead of thinking of ADHD as a deficit and a disorder, we saw it for what it really is, a way of being in the world which, with the right support, can be a wonderful way of being?
Drs. Hallowell and Ratey introduced a new term for ADHD in their latest book, ADHD 2.0. It’s VAST, or Variable Attention Stimulus Trait. The old term with its emphasis on pathology, on a “deficit disorder” is inaccurate and stigmatizing. The new term is far more accurate, allowing for positive attributes, not just negative ones. Dr. Hallowell explains the rich and complex world of VAST and how a simple change in framing can set off an entire shift in thinking and treatment. Learn how you can better support your students and children who have this trait, which often coexists with other
conditions such as dyslexia, executive function challenges, speech issues, and ASD. Don’t miss this opportunity to watch and hear from the “guru” on this topic, and have the opportunity to get your questions answered by one of the most engaging, passionate, and relatable speakers of our time. This session is appropriate for general teachers, special educators, speech pathologists, tutors, psychologists, parents, and anyone else interested in helping individuals of any age.
