DESCRIPTION:

Emily Hanford is a senior producer and correspondent for APM Reports, the documentary and investigative journalism group at American Public Media. She sent shockwaves across the US and around the globe when her September 2018 podcast and article, Hard Words: Why Aren’t Kids Being Taught to Read? brought mainstream media attention to the importance of teacher knowledge about the science of reading. In August, 2019, she followed up with another podcast and article, At a Loss for Words, which investigates the origins of a highly popular approach to reading instruction and how this approach makes it harder for children to learn how to read. In this webinar, Emily will tell the story of how she became interested in early reading instruction and go through some of the major “aha” moments she had while learning about the scientific research. She will also share what she’s learned from interviewing dozens of teachers and school leaders across the country. It’s clear there are no silver bullets in education, but Emily has become convinced that improving reading instruction is the closest we’ve got.
